The WV Thunder Went 3-0 in pool play and advanced to the championship round with wins over teams from Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee.  The Tennessee Glory team was a Sweet Sixteen team from the 2009 tournament.

Championship Round

Game One        Thunder 70 Cy Fair Nike Elite 48

Game Two        Thunder 61 Philadelphia Belles 48

Game Three      Thunder 58 Tennessee Lady Pride 54

Semi Finals       Thunder 63 All Iowa Attack 62

Championship    Thunder 53 Georgia Pistols Gold 50

In the Semi finals Vs Iowa Attack the Thunder took a 15 point lead into the 4th quarter but Iowa put on a big rally to close within one point as the Thunder scored only 5 points in the final quarter but with the lead, five was just enough to pull out the win 63-62. Jenna Burdette put up 23 points in the win. Brittani Rizzi also had double figures with 10 points. Kathryn Westbeld pulled down a team high 12 rebounds and scored 8 points.

The championship game was also a nail biter as the Georgia Pistols lead for most of the game with the Thunder finally tying the game late in the 4th quarter.  With less than a minute left the Pistols scored what would be their last basket and took a 50-48 lead and with less than 30 seconds left they were on the line for one + one and missed the front end. The Thunder went down and Mychal Johnson hit a jumper to tie the game at 50 all.  The Pistols had the ball with 13 seconds left and were attempting to run down the clock for a final shot. However, the ball went off the knee of a pistol player and the Thunder had the ball with 3.8 seconds left.  After a time out Griffin Dempsey threw the ball into Mychal Johnson who took a couple of dribbles and hit Brittani Rizzi with a pass. Brit’s 3-point shot was in the air as the final buzzer sounded.  Final score 53-50 Thunder.  Kathryn Westbeld had team high 17 boards and 17 points. Mychal Johnson added 11 points.

Adidas Ohio Showcase Cup Tournament
14u/15u  Division Columbus, OH
October 3, 4, 2009

WV Thunder 13u team played up in the 14-15u age division and went 5-0 capturing first place in the event.  Most of the games were really exciting as we had two 4 point games that went down to the wire and another double overtime game as well.  This was a great way to end the 2009 basketball season.  The championship game vs the Dayton Lady Hoopstars Black was another physical battle. In fact, we see them quite a bit in the championship game at events in and around Dayton, Columbus, and Cincinnati.  We won that battle Sunday 35-31.  The players who made the trip included -- Baylee Wallace and Sidney Pell (Peebles) -- Mychal Johnson and Griffin Dempsey (Huntington St. Joseph) -- Chandler Fulks and Terra Stapleton (Fairland) -- Jenna Burdette and  Jordan Parker (Eastern) -- Kelli Harrison (John Adams) -- Krista Maynard (Crum) -- McKenzie Butler (Mason County)

The highlight of pool play was the 3-pointer put in by Griffin Dempsey with just a couple of seconds on the clock to send the All Ohio Game into overtime which we were fortunate to win by scoring off the tip and then allowing just one point during the 3 minute overtime to pull out a 55-54 win.

Semi Finals

WV Thunder 32 -- Michigan Pistons 28
Mychal Johnson 7, Terra Stapleton 7, Jenna Burdette 4, Griffin Dempsey 3, McKenzie Butler 3, Chandler Fulks 2, Sidney Pell 2, Kelli Harrison 2, Baylee Wallace 2

The pistons had the Thunder on the ropes but the various traps and presses worked often enough that the Thunder pulled out the win.

Championship Game

WV Thunder 35 -- Dayton Lady Hoopstars Black 31
Mychal Johnson 14, Jenna Burdette 10, Terra Stapleton 7, McKenzie Butler 2, Jordan Parker 2

In the championship game old friends the Thunder and Dayton Black met and as is usually the case it was indeed a truly physical game and we were able to get a good performance from both Sidney Pell and Kelli Harrison when Terra Stapleton our 6’ 3 center was in foul trouble.  Mychal Johnson and Jenna Burdette stepped up big in this game as they usually do in the big time games.  Griffin Dempsey and McKenzie Butler did a superb job of taking care of the ball against constant pressure.
